MARVELETTES - HERE I AM BABY: SELECTED TRACKS 1961-69
The Marvelettes started their career on a high, scoring Motown's first #1 on the pop charts - Please Mr Postman in 1961. Things went slightly off the boil for a while after they turned down Where Did Our Love Go, which went on to be a massive hit for the Supremes, in whose shadow they remained to some extent.
The Marvelettes subsequently had many hits (a total of 23 top 100 hits in the US, 10 of them making the top 40), and are generally considered to be cooler than the Supremes by experts in these matters. They certainly made some great records
I have not excluded the hits from consideration for this compilation, which is what I would usually do. The Marvelettes had only one chart entry in the UK (When You're Young And In Love got to number 13 in 1967), and you don't often hear their records these days, so this is my personal choice of everything they did, which I hope others will also enjoy. Presented in glorious mono.
That's How Heartaches Are Made
Little Girl Blue
Too Many Fish In The Sea
Too Hurt To Cry, Too Much In Love To Say Goodbye
Tonight Was Made For Love
You're The One
Rainy Mourning
He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'
Locking Up My Heart
When You're Young And In Love
Don't Make Hurting Me A Habit
Don't Mess With Bill
Why Must You Go
Danger Heartbreak Dead Ahead
Here I Am Baby
Please Mr. Postman
Barefootin'
I'll Keep Holding On
The One Who Really Loves You
The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game
Track 1, which I don't think I had ever heard until I came to make this compilation, has instantly become one of my top 10 Motown records of all time.
