JOHN LENNON - #9 DREAM
The Beatles were an unlikely and extraordinary combination of talents, and without any one of them the whole thing probably wouldn't have worked. If Paul had not gone to that local church fĂȘte on 6 July 1957 and met John, it's safe to say that the world as we know it would be a pretty different place.
John's writing, playing and singing were at the very heart of the magic. But after the Beatles broke up, John's solo career seemed to me at the time a bit of a disappointment. I just didn't get the first couple of albums, but then I worked out why. John was basically done with trying to entertain people and work on other people's terms. He'd been there, done that and got the t-shirt in an era-defining way. So now he was going to do what he wanted, exactly when and how he wanted. And no-one was about to be the restraining influence that Paul and the guys had probably been. As a result, John's obsessions and issues came to the fore when it came to making records.
Me, I preferred the old John. But the dust has had 40+ years to settle, so I've been trying to put together an album's worth of post-Beatles material that an old Beatles fan like me would appreciate.
Turns out I could. Here's what I've come up with:
01 #9 Dream
02 Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)
03 Hold On
04 One Day (At A Time)
05 I Know (I Know)
06 Love
07 Bless You
08 Gimme Some Truth
09 Going Down On Love
10 You Are Here
11 I'm Losing You
12 Jealous Guy
13 Grow Old with Me
14 Woman
I've called it #9 Dream because I like the song and it makes a good album title. After the event, I realised that several of the songs I have chosen have a dreamy quality, which makes it even more appropriate.
Anyway, I'm happy to say it makes an absolutely outstanding 51 minute album.
In case you're wondering, I don't like Imagine, on any level. Don't get me started.
