THE ROLLING STONES: STEPNEY JEWELS
I've not really followed the Stones since Exile On Main St, 51 years ago. I think I probably heard Goats Head Soup, didn't think much of it, and never went back for more. I've always thought of myself as a Decca Stones person.
So when I heard Hackney Diamonds, having succumbed to all the hype surrounding it, I was surprised how much I liked it. It's a superb album on every level, great sounding, and Jagger is the star of the show. The songs, especially the lyrics, are really good, and the album as a whole has a particular feel to it, giving the impression (to me at least) that maybe that's it for the Stones (although I've heard differently from other sources).
Anyway, I was inspired to go back and see what I had missed - the 12 studio albums from Goats Head Soup to A Bigger Bang.
Not everything was to my taste, but there were a good number of tracks I like a lot, most of which I had never heard before. So I thought I would use some of them to make an album aimed at people who, like me, are returning to the Stones after a few decades away. I've tried to put together a varied, entertaining album rather than a "best of" or "greatest hits" compilation. It doesn't outstay its welcome at a trim 47 minutes.
01 Hang Fire
02 Low Down
03 No Use in Crying
04 Rock and a Hard Place
05 Driving Too Fast
06 Sleep Tonight
07 Fight
08 Hand of Fate
09 Moon Is Up
10 All the Way Down
11 Sad Sad Sad
12 Almost Hear You Sigh
I've called it Stepney Jewels in a blatant and transparent attempt to associate it with Hackney Diamonds in people's minds. For overseas readers, Stepney is an East London neighbourhood in the Borough of Tower Hamlets, and formerly had a reputation for poverty, overcrowding, violence and political dissent. The whole country is like that now, of course.
The title is my invention so, unlike Hackney Diamonds, Stepney Jewels doesn't mean anything in particular. It could, I suppose, mean a lot of things, some of them unsuitable for polite company. But then, it is a Stones album.
Finally, the cover art of the 12 RS albums I used is generally horrible, and in some cases plain nasty (Some Girls, Emotional Rescue!!??). I don't get it - ironic use of bad taste, perhaps? And Hackney Diamonds is no exception, in my book. I have made a cover for my album which I hope is at least better than the worst.
